Venus Fly trap Dionaea Muscipula Plant
Venus Fly trap Dionaea Muscipula Plant
Enhance your home with one of the most iconic of plants, the Venus Fly Trap (Dionaea Muscipula).
They are fascinating plants. The traps snap shut when touched, trapping insects inside, which are then digested by the plant. The plant should never be allowed to dry out and should only be given rainwater or distilled water (available on our site). When an insect touches the hairs on the trap this triggers the jaws of the trap to close - trapping the insect. The plant then secretes an enzyme which essentially 'dissolves' the insect, so that it can be digested. After a few days, the fly trap will re-open, ready for it's next victim.
Caring for your Fly Trap: They need bright light, but not direct hot sun. A warm environment with a constant supply of moisture. The plant should never be allowed to dry out. They are sensitive to chemicals, so only use distilled water or rain water. Do not use fertiliser on them as this can harm the plant, insects provide them with all the nutrients they need. They only need approx 2 – 3 insects per month Their active growing and feeding season is from May through to October. During which time the soil should be kept constantly damp. The plant will go dormant during the winter during which time much of the foliage will die back or become smaller.
*The size of the plant you will receive may vary, along with the number of traps and red pigment but you will receive a healthy and growing Venus Fly Trap.*
